Ok, so I know I've posted a months worth of posts over the weekend but had to share this last one.
In my last post I mentioned I wasn't too much in the spirit of the holidays yet. Well, having the three awesome kids I do we always have some sort of Disney channel show on in our house. One of the favorites is "Good Luck Charlie". I have to say a few of the shows the kids watch on a regular basis just seem to draw me in. This being one of them. Tonight the episode was called "A Duncan Christmas". In the show the oldest daughter and and her boyfriend sang a song. "My Song For You". Listening to this song my body felt warm and I got all tingly inside. Just what I needed to hear. I immediately hopped on youtube, and there it was.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDI0HIhOg70
As Taya and I listened she began to sing along and by the third replay tears were in my eyes. I hope this song moves you all, too.

Innocence and Gratitude
Living in Texas, you never really know what kind of weather to expect around the holidays and for Christmas. Because of this, it sometimes takes me longer to get with that holiday spirit. Don't get me wrong, the tree is up, all adorned with lights and ornaments and as of today, a plethora of assorted candy canes. Along with many, many(many) presents. Even with the house decked out the spirit of Christmas is still trying to make it's way into my heart. I'm getting there.
Last Christmas the kids asked for, and got, way too many presents. Presents that after 2 days were broke, others that became boring after a month and some that were completely a memory by Easter. We talked about it and Matt and I decided that this year we would keep it simple. Simple as in a couple gifts each, totalling $50 a kiddo. With the extra money we would save we want to take them to the Great Wolf Lodge on Christmas day. To me, the memories we'll be making as a family are a hundred times greater than any amount of gifts. At first I was thinking the kids would have mixed emotions about this due to the fact that they love tearing open that wrapping paper and making my living room a trash dump. When I approached the kids with this new found idea of mine, they were, for a moment skeptical. With some compromising on the "each child budget" being a bit bigger(gotta love my Corbin) we came to an agreement. $100(have already way surpassed even that...and aren't done yet!).
When asked what they all want for Christmas this year, their lists are very minimal. Nothing extravagant. As a matter of fact the one who wants the most is Taya. She's five, this is normal. But the boys...they are growing. They are maturing. Their wants for cars, trucks, play dough, etc have now changed into MP3 players, cell phones and Under Armour anything. This saddens me but at the same time brings a sense of pride knowing they both are on the right path.
I'll never forget the day a couple weeks ago when we were driving down the road and I hadn't really gotten any answers out of Ethan as to what he wants under the tree for him this year. I asked. He replied. "Nothing really. I have all I ever really wanted." My heart melted. How mature. How grateful he is for the things he already has...most of which he didn't even ask for but received because he's a good kid.
Matt has a job that requires him to work nights. Twelve hour shifts. This puts a bit of a wrench in my Great Wolf plans since Matt has to work the day after Christmas. I told the kids we might have to hold off on our winter wonderland excursion to the lodge. They were all bummed. To my surprise, the boys said they were looking forward to the memories we will make as a family. Priceless. Really have to make this happen now.
The innocence of children is amazing to me. I look at the boys and I see my heart. I see the innocence of two handsome, cute, little guys. One of which I see turning into a young man faster than I want. The other, loving every aspect of being a little boy. I look at Taya and see the little girl I used to be. The little girl who didn't have a care in the world and thought her mom hung the moon(still do, mom). I see the innocence that I wish I still had. The innocence I hope they always keep.
Over the past couple days, my kids alone, have shown me the spirit of Christmas. For that I am grateful.

Ethan's First Dance
Today, this week really, has been tough. I feel like life is moving full speed ahead and I'm stuck in slow motion. It seems like it was yesterday when Ethan was learning to walk. To talk. To smile. He was learning to love life and just being a little boy.
For the past few days I have been in a funk. Couldn't figure out why. Then today it hit me. Like a ton of bricks. My little boy, my first born, is growing up. This terrifies me. For anyone that knows our family well at all, you know that my relationship with Ethan has for many years been tense. Strained, really. Ya see, we are so much alike it works against us. Both stubborn. Both want our own way. Both hate taking orders. Both love with our whole heart and soul.
I realized today that I am so hard on Ethan because I see myself in him. I feel like I turned out pretty well(thanks to my very understanding folks) and I put so much pressure on Ethan to follow that path. So much so it pushes him away. I realize that I have spent the past eleven years being more like a drill Sargent than a nice, fun mom. To him at least. I guess since he's my first I'm learning through years and years of mistakes. The fact is, I'm gonna continue learning through mistakes the rest of my life.
I've been trying so hard to keep Ethan(and my other two) young and innocent that I really have forgotten what it's like to be a kid. To be carefree. When your greatest worry is if the weather will be nice so you can play outside. I've come to the conclusion that life is going to move on, my kids ARE going to mature and grow up and I need to deal with it whether I like it or not. I can keep trying to treat Ethan like the little boy he once was, the little boy I want him to stay, and push him away OR I can learn to embrace this new phase in life and become closer to Ethan than I ever have been before and watch and enjoy the young man he is turning in to. I choose to embrace this. I choose to embrace Ethan.
As I type this Ethan is at his first dance. He was so excited. He is DJ'ing the first hour. As I dropped him off and drove away, I cried...for the third time tonight. I can't wait to pick him up and hear all about it. He's all about the details. Mighty handsome if I do say so myself.
He taught me that it's possible to love unconditionally. And that it's possible to be loved unconditionally. He has shown me it's okay to let go...and to embrace the future.

Thankful Thoughts
At the beginning of November, being the month for Thanksgiving, I decided to acknowledge the many things I'm thankful for on a daily basis. Yes, I know, I should acknowledge these things everyday throughout the year, but, I am human and this doesn't always happen.
So...here they are, in no particular order.
-I am absolutely thankful for three, healthy, beautiful, spunky, full of life children :-)
-I am thankful for a husband that knows me inside and out...and still loves me and makes me feel special everyday :-)
-Thankful that my kids are abundantly able to yell and scream at one another(the alternative horrifies me).
-That we have found a new church home closer to home. Felt so welcomed there.
-For a mom and dad that, since we were little, have gone without at times so that my brother and I didn't have to.
-That my belief in Jesus Christ is so strong that it won't let me worry about who is President of the United States...or anywhere else.
-For a brother that is an amazing uncle to my kiddos.
-For my beautiful, spunky, sassy niece, Nikki. And for her mom, Nicole.
-For my mother-in-law, who even though she's battling cancer right now, still somehow manages to keep her big, beautiful smile on her face and see God's grace everyday.
-For a father-in-law who inspires so many with his wisdom and who has shaped my husband into the man, father and husband he is today.
-For my 9 year old's love of sports. He has more knowledge than most men and teaches me whenever I'm confused.
-For knowing and being loved by my grandma who passed away 21 years ago November 11th.
-For my little girl that reminds me everyday what it's like to have a true best friend for always.
-That God has blessed me with a son(Ethan) who is so much like me. Attitude, stubbornness and determined will. It makes us both stronger everyday.
-For online shopping ;-)
-For both days of the week that start with an "S".
-That we have found a church my kids actually ask to go to :)
-For date nights and date night do-overs with my love.
-For the love my parents have for my children. Even though they don't see each other nearly enough, when my dad comes to town, my kids consume them.
There are others but they all seem so trivial now.
On Black Friday we spent the day at home and that night the boys headed out to a football game with my dad and brother. My mom joined Taya and I for a "girls night". We went to Toys-R-Us(spent the entire night there) then had a great dinner at Olive Garden, my fave.
Saturday night I decided to take the boys to the Under Armour store in Allen and let them give me ideas for their Christmas gifts. Recently both Ethan and Corbin can't get enough of this UA stuff. On our way, we were sitting in ridiculous traffic listening to the radio. A song came on(an old song from my high school days) that I have heard a million times over the years. However, in that moment, I looked to my right and sitting in the seat next to me was Ethan. At first I was being funny and obnoxious singing it to Ethan but the more I sang and pinched his cheeks the more I realized I was actually singing it TO Ethan. The words are priceless for a mother to say, let alone sing to her children. I could tell by the look on Ethan's face he felt it as much as I did. And the words I was singing to him meant so much more than I ever could have imagined fifteen years ago when the song came out. It's called "You won't ever be lonely". Here's the youtube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_xsyYCYIY4
Well, after that song we changed it to Christmas music. James Taylor came on and he lost every one's interest. Ethan actually asked who he was and "what happened to Jingle Bells because this guy is terrible?". I couldn't help but chuckle. One of my favorite Christmas songs then came on. The Christmas Shoes. It's a sad song but I can never change the station. The kids asked why it was so sad and what was it about. I explained that it was about a little boy wanting to buy his very sick mommy these special shoes because he wanted her to be beautiful if she met Jesus that night. As I explained it, tears were filling my eyes and again, Ethan could see the emotion. After the song was over we talked about it some more and went on with our night. The very next day we were in the car, all five of us and again, the song came on. Matt went to change the station when all three kids hollered and said that was their favorite song. Melted my heart. Once Matt listened to the song, he too was hooked. I hope I have many, many years with my babies but I can only hope and pray that if I were ever in that situation my kids would all do the same for me.

Anyway, Corbin just came and told me my blog is super long, so I'll do us all a favor and call it quits.
Happy Holidays from our family to yours!

Fort Worth Water Gardens
Last night the kids and I joined my mom and brother, for, what was supposed to be my dads last football game of the season. I say supposed to be because they ended up killin' it and are now headed to the PLAYOFFS! That's another post for another time.
The drive to Lake Worth is 2 hours so we all crashed on my dad's apartment floor(yes, my parents currently are residing in two different residences-hopefully not for much longer).
Anyway, today we hung out in Fort Worth while my dad the coaching thing. We started off with breakfast at IHOP then headed down town. My mom had heard of the Water Gardens but had never been so we decided to give it a shot. After circling downtown for twenty minutes we finally found a parking meter and parked. Funny thing about this...AFTER I paid for the meter, I actually then read the meter and realized weekends are free. Yep, there went my hard owned 75 cents.
We made it to our destination and were literally all in awe. Even the KIDS. It was so beautiful. The main attraction was the Active Water Pool.
They also have a Quiet Pool. The name says it all. I accidentally deleted the pics of that pool though. :(
However, I got some pretty cool shots of the kids and the trees in the pool area.
These last photos are from the kids just running up and down and all over the concrete walls.
All in all it was a really neat place to. We'll definitely take daddy back. :)

Storybook Tea Party
Today was a fairytale.
This morning Taya, my mom and I got to attend a tea party at the high school. It was all about little girls favorite storybooks. Goldilocks and The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, Peter Pan, The Tortoise and The Hare and much more. And all the popular nursery rhythms. Itsy, Bitsy Spider. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, I'm A Little Tea Pot, Mary Had A Little Lamb and so on. The high school students all dressed up as the different storybook characters. Really neat costumes...brought to life.
While there we ate. The "Fare" consisted of the following:
Fairy Godmother's Hat with Marshmallow Pop Topper
Cinderella's Slipper Cupcake
Chicken Little's Sandwich
Humpty Dumpty's Pinwheel
Tinkerbell's Fruit Wand
Miss Muffet's Orange Scone with Clotted Cream and Jam
Ariel's Magic Punch
Hot Tea

Halloween 2012
It's so hard to believe that Halloween has already come and gone and that 2012 is quickly coming to an end. It seems like the years just crawl when you're a child but as you mature and become an adult, the years fly by. Always planning a birthday party, preparing for sports games, gearing up for holiday festivities or being filled with excitement for the yearly vacation trips. Whatever it is, you just stay busy.
This Halloween Matt had to work so my mom gladly joined in the craziness. We had a zombie, a "jacked up" football player and a cowgirl cheerleader(she just couldn't decide...so she was a little of both). I felt pretty safe :-)
I've never done face painting and/or make-up'ing so I was pretty impressed with my work.
The plan was to go to the "mansions" again and walk our tails off. First we made a quick stop for a fun, quick hayride and then off to the "mansions". Once we got to the church I realized plans had changed. This was a good option for the whole night. They had three hayrides. A very kid friendly one for the little bits to trick-or-treat, a medium one for the older kids to trick-or-treat as well as be a bit scared and then the "scary" one(this involves no getting candy, just plain ole' monsters jumping out). The boys wanted scary(truth be told, so did I) and Taya wanted the kiddie one. So we compromised and did the medium one.
All three hayrides were "tricked out" real nice-like. Side note: the girl raising her hand(Kennedy) lives across from my folks and has a huge crush on Ethan and the one in the blue(Kiley) is Ethan's ex.

(Ready to go! Corbin was clearly annoyed with me...)

On our way we went...trick-or-treating. As we made our way through the neighborhood, there were several scary "things" jumping out. I was loving it, however, my darling Taya...not so much. At one point she screamed "I don't like this place no more!" (place being the hayride). My mom and I died laughing.
Once we got done gathering our candy(and children) we headed back to the church. Lucky for me and the boys the scary hayride was just starting to load. We dropped Taya and Mema inside to grab some snacks and back out we went. Me and my boys on a haunted hayride. It was awesome. Needless to say, Corbin ended up in the center of the trailer with all the little girls. Ethan was on the edge and took it like a champ. And I somehow ended up with a little 6 year girl named Tyler in my lap! Gotta give her props for even boarding the trailer!
By the time all the hayrides were said and done it was too late to go to the "mansions". The boys were a bit bummed about that but I still think they all three had a pretty great time. And hey, we'll try to make it to the "mansions" next year.
